I wasn’t sure where it would be, so I asked a wonderful individual to help me, and it turned out I had talked to her on the phone two years ago about my book! What are the odds?! She asked if I wanted to sign the copies. (Of course I did!) She brought little stickers for the books to show they were signed, as well as a Sharpie. ☺️ Someone nearby overheard us talking and asked about my book! I watched the 70-minute Battleship Potemkin (1925) I watched the 70-minute Battleship Potemkin (1925) tonight. There was a 120-minute version, but I couldn’t find details about it online, so I went ahead and watched the well-known 70-minute one. Intriguing! Didn’t expect the ending, for sure. The red flag in the midst of the black and white film caught me by surprise, as well. Something that was interesting was the kind of negativity that the mutiny was portrayed with near the beginning, though the tone shifted later on. I suspect the “for a spoonful of borscht” comment was supposed to be from the Russian commanders’ sarcastic/scornful perspective, not from the audience’s. The child being shot and dying made me think of Les Miserables. The baby in the carriage that goes tumbling down the steps (the camera moving with the carriage) was well done. Many surprises here and there. Definitely worth watching. Thoughts on Metropolis (1927): I watched the rema Thoughts on Metropolis (1927): I watched the remastered version with the 25 minutes or so of extra film. Super impressed by the set designs and models. Also impressed by the acting - both Gustav Frohlich and Brigitte Helm. Amazing that some of the shots were pretty creative, considering it was 1927 (for instance, the shot where the camera follows Frohlich's arm as he reaches towards Helm's dropped scarf in Rotwang's house). Also, many shots where Helm and/or Frohlich stare directly into the camera, crazed, which is pretty effective. The story itself was simple enough, but the tools were there to really draw the audience in... When the mob of workers were burning one of the Helms at the stake, I was worried they had the good one! And then when Frohlich and Rotwang were battling on the roof, I wasn't sure who would win. So many things in it reminded me of The Fifth Element. #fritzlang #fritzlangmetropolis #metropolis #janusfilms
Just sent my thoughts on M to a friend (the friend Just sent my thoughts on M to a friend (the friend who got me to watch this movie). Going to paste them below, as well. I cannot recommend watching this movie enough. Amazing. The end blew me away. Thoughts (SPOILER WARNING): When Peter Lorre is attempting to escape the attic of the building, and the handle turns from the other side, as the criminals attempt to enter it... Made my heart skip a beat! Intriguing use of whistling. Lorre played the character SO WELL, particularly at the end, as well as when he is standing outside the cutlery/utensil/knife shop and sees the child's reflection in the window and is compelled to follow the child. Brilliant for the one boy, who follows the blind man's advice, to write on his hand with chalk the letter "M" and slap Lorre on the back with it. Perfect visual for the camera. Very The Scarlet Letter. I liked that the movie is about the entire community working together to catch this murderer - the criminals and beggars included. The camera shots feel so modern for 1931! I was surprised! When Lorre turns around after being dragged into a basement by the criminals, and the space is filled with like 200 people... and it's completely silent. Sooooo well done. Love the areas of silence in the film. I wish films today used quiet just as effectively. The end debate would be perfect to show my students in class sometime. It was surprising to me when Lorre wound up stuck in the building (I thought he would escape). It upped the suspense and kept it high. I particularly liked how, when Lorre is turned over to the law, that's the end of the movie. It's open to interpretation. My initial interpretation was that everything the criminals said would happen (about Lorre being "rehabilitated" and then later escaping) would indeed happen. The mother's last statement of "Someone needs to keep a better watch" means that this chaotic system will always commence, and the best that one can do is make sure one's child never becomes part of it. Loved it. I am on to the second in the series. Came across this copy of Dune, though, via @fanfiaddict and had to have it. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . My GoodReads Review of Dune: I was surprised by how much I loved this story. I had been meaning to read Dune for years, and the upcoming movie finally pushed me to read it. I am thoroughly impressed. Herbert knows his world through and through. The worldbuilding is so well done, and the characters feel multi-dimensional and real. I admit that the end of the book was a bit lacking in terms of scenes with the Baron and Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen; there are also very few fight scenes leading up to Paul's success, which was surprising. That being said, expertly written.
